Awa Odori & Yosakoi
(draft — to be rewritten from the ledger) Tokushima's Awa Odori grew out of the Bon Odori current into one of Japan's largest dance festivals. Then in 1954, Kochi created the Yosakoi festival outright to revive its shopping streets; carrying naruko clappers, the form spread after 1992 to more than two hundred towns. A festival can be a thousand-year inheritance — or it can be deliberately made. The modern side of the dance current shows the second way.
